About Michelle

Michelle is currently a lecturer in public relations and the internship director for the Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies at the University of Denver. She previously served as an assistant professor of public relations in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. Her research focuses on social media, political campaigns and elections; media ethics; and the convergence of politics and pop culture.

Michelle has a decade of experience in public relations, brand management and fund raising. Prior to entering the academy, she worked for a national foundation in Washington, DC; was Development Director for the Women’s Bean Project in Denver, CO; worked in product and project management in the high tech sector; and most recently served as co-manager of the public information team for the T-REX project, a $2 billion multi-modal construction project along Colorado’s front range.

In addition to her Ph.D. from the University of Oregon (expected spring 2011), Michelle earned an M.S. in Communications from Colorado State University and an M.A. in International Studies from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver. She completed her undergraduate work at the Pennsylvania State University.

Michelle is a member of the American Association of Political Consultants, the Public Relations Society of America and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

About Kelli

In her professional life, Kelli is a business and community leader. In her academic life, Kelli is a cheerleader, mentor and adviser.

Kelli has ten years of public relations experience; the last seven as the director of a full-service public relations, marketing and design agency. As such, she’s been directly responsible for high-level communication, strategic planning, budget management and leadership for a wide variety of clients, many of which are nonprofits and community organizations.

Her seven years of work with undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism & Communication has required her to stay on the cutting edge of research and practice in public relations. It’s also given Kelli a chance to work with some of the most talented educators and researchers she knows. Her research interests include: social media, public health communication and Millennials in PR agencies. In addition to teaching public relations and social media courses, Kelli is also the faculty adviser for Allen Hall Public Relations, the student-run PR firm at the SOJC.
